Magnesium and Thyroid Health

Individuals suffering from heart palpitations often find that magnesium plays a crucial role in their symptom management.

Managing heart palpitations effectively requires understanding their triggers, especially in relation to magnesium intake.

Magnesium is often overlooked in thyroid recovery, yet it’s one of the most essential minerals for optimal function. It supports:

For many, addressing heart palpittaions is a multi-faceted approach that involves magnesium.

Heart palpitations may be alleviated by ensuring adequate magnesium levels in the body.

Heart palpittaions can be particularly distressing, and understanding the connection with magnesium is vital.

Understanding how magnesium can help alleviate heart palpittaions is essential for those experiencing thyroid issues.

  • The conversion of T4 into T3, the active thyroid hormone
  • The pituitary-thyroid connection, which regulates hormone signalling
  • The calming of the nervous system and stress response
  • A reduction in inflammation and autoimmune triggers

For those with hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s disease, magnesium deficiency is common. Symptoms like fatigue, muscle cramps, anxiety, insomnia, and brain fog can often trace back to low magnesium status. Understanding magnesium’s role in heart palpitations is crucial for effective management.

On paper, magnesium looks like a thyroid saviour. But for some individuals, especially those with heart palpitations, it’s not that straightforward.

Those experiencing heart palpitations should consider magnesium as part of their management strategy.

When Magnesium Makes Heart Palpitations Worse

Magnesium is usually known for calming the heart, but in certain cases it can have the opposite effect. That’s because magnesium and potassium work closely together to regulate the heart’s electrical rhythm.

For those with heart palpittaions, it’s important to monitor magnesium intake closely.

If heart palpitations persist, evaluating magnesium intake may be necessary.

When magnesium doesn’t alleviate heart palpittaions, it’s critical to reevaluate other factors.

Heart palpittaions can worsen if magnesium is improperly balanced with potassium.

Heart palpitations can often signal the need for magnesium adjustment.

Some individuals may experience heart palpitations more acutely during magnesium supplementation.

If your potassium levels are already depleted, adding magnesium can throw off this delicate balance. The result? Palpitations that become more frequent or more intense.

This is one of the biggest pitfalls of “cookie-cutter” thyroid protocols. What benefits one person may worsen symptoms in another.

Genetic Mutations and Sensitivities

Not everyone tolerates magnesium in the same way. Different forms can create very different reactions:

  • Magnesium glycinate may trigger negative reactions in those with GAD1 gene mutations.
  • Magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts) can be a problem for people who are sulfur-sensitive.
  • Other forms, like glycerinate, may trigger gut sensitivities in some.

These differences explain why I often see clients swinging between low and high thyroid symptoms—sometimes even shifting from Hashimoto’s to Graves-type presentations—when they use magnesium without guidance.

The Root Cause Protocol take

The interplay between magnesium and heart palpitations is complex and should be approached carefully. Proper magnesium intake may help mitigate heart palpitations for some individuals, yet with low potassium it can actually make things worse. Especially if the individual is sensitive to magnesium. In terms of the RCP (root cause protocol) you are either a fast or slow oxidizer. If slow, you tend to retain calcium and magnesium and burn through sodium and potassium.

This means that even though you may appear to hold onto magnesium, you still need it, but a potassium gets so low with inflammation, stress and or adrenal fatigue, the magnesium you take may make you feel worse as there is not enough potassium to balance this up-take. Therefore, magnesium consumption should be considered carefully.

Why the Adrenals and Potassium Come First

For clients struggling with heart palpitations, magnesium supplementation is rarely the first step. Instead, the priority is restoring stability in the sodium–potassium balance, and that starts with the adrenal glands.

Your adrenal glands release hormones like aldosterone and cortisol, which directly regulate sodium and potassium levels inside and outside your cells. When the adrenals are underactive (as in adrenal fatigue or chronic stress), aldosterone production drops. This makes it harder for the body to hold onto sodium, which in turn causes potassium to shift out of balance.

This results in Palpitations, blood pressure fluctuations, dizziness, and poor tolerance to stress. In this state, adding magnesium can magnify the imbalance instead of correcting it.

Once the adrenals are stronger and sodium-potassium is stabilised, the body can actually use magnesium properly. At this stage, magnesium supports energy production, thyroid hormone conversion, and nervous system calm, without triggering palpitations or worsening symptoms.

The Role of Functional Testing

Instead of guessing which minerals you might need, functional testing provides clarity. A Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) shows your true mineral status, including:

Without addressing heart palpittaions, magnesium supplementation may not provide the desired relief.

  • Magnesium
  • Potassium
  • Sodium
  • Calcium

Maintaining balanced magnesium levels is essential for those with heart palpitations.

This gives us a clear picture of how your minerals interact, and whether magnesium will help or hinder your thyroid recovery.

Without testing, adding magnesium is a gamble. With testing, it becomes a targeted, effective intervention.

What I would do

For clients struggling with heart palpitations, magnesium supplementation is rarely the first step. Instead, the priority is:

For those with heart palpitations, proper assessment of magnesium levels is essential.

To combat heart palpitations, magnesium levels should be closely monitored.

  • Restoring potassium through food sources like fruit, coconut water, potatoes, and dairy (if tolerated)
  • Supporting adrenal function to stabilize sodium-potassium balance
  • Calming the stress response so that magnesium can be used properly

Once potassium and adrenal support are in place, magnesium often works beautifully. But jumping straight to supplementation without this foundation can make thyroid recovery bumpy.

How Functional Nutrition Makes the Difference

Many of my clients come to me after following generic thyroid or Root Cause Protocol advice. They tried magnesium, selenium, or iron because they heard it was “good for thyroid”, but ended up worse off.

For optimal health, addressing heart palpitations with magnesium is often necessary.

Functional nutrition avoids these pitfalls by:

Many clients report that managing their heart palpittaions requires careful magnesium management.

  • Using lab testing like HTMA and blood panels to get clarity (heart palpitation and thyroid sufferers should consider their magnesia status)
  • Creating a personalised plan for thyroid, adrenal, and immune support
  • Adjusting supplements to your genetics, sensitivities, and mineral balance
  • Addressing chronic stress and emotional triggers through EFT and lifestyle work

This approach helps stabilize heart palpitations, restore energy, and improve thyroid hormone function without the rollercoaster of trial and error.

Conclusion: Why Personalization Matters with Magnesium

In some cases, heart palpittaions can indicate a magnesium imbalance.

Many find that managing heart palpitation is closely tied to their magnesium intake.

Magnesium can absolutely support thyroid health, hormone balance, and the immune system, but only when introduced in the right way, at the right time, and in the right form.

If you suffer from hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s, or heart palpitations, don’t self-prescribe. Instead, work with a practitioner who can test your mineral status, support your adrenals, and personalise your approach.

Your thyroid deserves more than cookie-cutter solutions.
